The Middleton House of Correction is a prison in Middleton, MA, managed by the Essex County Sheriff's Department. The facility experienced a major outbreak of Covid-19 in November, 2021, during which 57 people detained in the prison along with eight employees tested positive for the virus in a period of two days. Andrew daMota, attorney with the Committee for Public Counsel Services who represents William Lopez (currently detained in the prison), stated in a brief filed in Lopez’s case, “I have directly observed nearly every single corrections officer violate mask protocol," further noting that "replacement masks and soap are not readily available to inmates."
