Kostas Research Institute at Northeastern University

The George J. Kostas Research Institute for Homeland Security is a 70,000 square foot research and development facility located within Northeastern University’s Innovation Campus in Burlington, MA. Since its opening in 2011, Northeastern University has used the Kostas Research Institute to foster links with the US military, US weapons developers, and US law enforcement agencies.

Striving to attract these servants of US empire to its facility, Northeastern University boasts that the Kostas Research Institute is "conveniently located on Northeastern University’s Innovation Campus in Burlington MA, with good access to the greater-Boston innovation ecosystem," further noting that the institute is "Also home to the Army Research Laboratory Northeast, Air Force programs of record, our state-of-the-art indoor outdoor drone cage as well as the Colesseum RF laboratory and other university labs." The Woburn-based Daily Times Chronicle reports that the Kostas Research Institute brings together "some of the state's preeminent university and corporate researchers to move innovations in the laboratory directly to those serving on the battlefield," further elaborating that these researchers at Kostas "are already experimenting with drones, explosive and force-resistant building materials, and nanotechnology or microscopic robotics and electronics."

Furthermore, Northeastern University offers up the Kostas Research Institute for "private and as-needed secure convening venue for researchers, industry practitioners, and government agencies." Northeastern University boasts that agencies and companies which have utilized the facility for this purpose include:

In 2018, the Kostas Research Institute became the host site of a US Army Research Laboratory (ARL). As the Daily Times Chronicle reported:

[On] a 14-acre parcel off South Bedford Road, situated not far from the Woburn line and just a few miles away from the Burlington Mall, the U.S. Army's best and brightest intend to wipe away any and all enemy advantages by creating the world's most formidable technological partnership.

Earlier this month, a host of dignitaries descended upon Northeastern University's George J. Kostas Research Institute for Homeland Security to formalize a unique collaboration between academia, tech companies, and the defense department's U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL).

Within the secretive 70,000 square foot facility, where researchers are already experimenting with drones, explosive and force-resistant building materials, and nanotechnology or microscopic robotics and electronics, the ARL plans to house its northeastern regional partnership headquarters.

In the undertaking, staff from the ARL's 3,000-plus strong civilian and military workforce will labor directly alongside some of the state's preeminent university and corporate researchers to move innovations in the laboratory directly to those serving on the battlefield.

Amongst those attending the 2018 ceremony for the launch of the US Army Research Laboratory at the Kostas Research Institute were Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker, MA senators Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren, and MA congressman Seth Moulton.
