Salem State University

Salem State University is a public university which supports Israel, as well as policing, prisons, and the US military.

Support for Israel

Salem State University is an "affiliate campus" of the Hillel Council of New England. The Hillel Council of New England directs students to get involved in Zionist programming and organizations, and encourages students to attend Israel-based internship programs and spring break trips to Israel. In December 2021, Salem State University partnered with the Consulate General of Israel to New England to put on an exhibition "which recognize[d] diplomats who saved Jews during the Holocaust and were later honored as Righteous Among the Nations by the State of Israel."

Support for Police, Prisons, and the US Military

The Salem State University Police Department is listed as a full member of the Greater Boston Police Council, a "law enforcement council" (LEC) set up in the 1970s to link regional police forces and share resources for policing anti-war protests. LECs in Massachusetts have played a central role in militarizing police by organizing SWAT teams and purchasing military equipment such as Lenco Bearcats and other armored vehicles.

Salem State University hosted numerous law enforcement agencies to present to Salem State students at its 2022 Virtual Job and Internship Fair. These included: the Essex County Sheriff's Department, the Massachusetts State Police, the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office, the New Hampshire State Police, the New Orleans Police Department, the United States Capitol Police. In addition to these law enforcement agencies,  Salem State's 2022 career fair featured the The Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Correction Office (who oversee Massachusetts prisons), as well as the The U.S. Navy Talent Acquisition Group New England (which aims to recruit impressionable young New Englanders into the US military).

Salem State University also maintains a dining services contract with Aramark, a major entity within the US prison-industrial complex. Aramark provides food as well as clothing services to prisons and jails, including jails that work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain Black and Brown migrants. As the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) has documented, “Aramark is the largest provider of food services to U.S. prisons, having 38% of the market share.” AFSC has further reported that Aramark's food harms the incarcerated people who consume it, noting: “The company reduces quantities and has been repeatedly accused of severe health and safety violations, sanitation violations, unauthorized food substitutions, undercooked food, and food shortages." (See entry on Aramark for more information.)
